The oldest building in Porterdale is known as the stagecoach house. This home located at 38 S. Broad Street is believed to be built sometime in the 1820s when Cedar Shoals was just a small settlement. Large stepping stones located at the front and back of the home are reputed to have been used for travelers to step up and step down when entering and exiting their stagecoach. This suggests that this building served as a stagecoach inn for travelers coming to Cedar Shoals. By the time that Porterdale Mill was established, stagecoaches were obsolete. The structure was bought by the Bibb Company to use as a boarding house until it was eventually sold as a private residence.
